What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an effective form of medical treatment that evolved into a complete holistic health care system. It originated in China 2,500 years ago. Practitioners of acupuncture use the technics and ancient wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine, combined with extensive training in western medicine. Acupuncture is supported by modern scientific research. It is recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and World Health Organization (WHO) as effective in treating many medical conditions.
Acupuncture promotes natural healing. It supports the immune system, physical and emotional health, improves overall body function and well being. It is safe, painless, effective and can also be used as a preventive therapy. Acupuncture is a natural and gentle treatment method without side effects. The best results from acupuncture treatment are achieved if they are consistent and regular.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
The explanation of the Traditional Chinese Medicine is that channels (meridians) of energy run through the body and over its surface like rivers to irrigate and nourish the tissues, and organs. Any obstruction and imbalance in the channels manifests as pain or disease. Acupuncture treatment can help the body to restore the balance by needling specific points on these meridians.
The modern scientific explanation is that acupuncture needles stimulate the nervous system to release pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins and immune system cells in the body. It may alter the brain chemistry by stimulating the release of neurotransmitters. They affect the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions, such as immune reaction, blood pressure, blood flow and body temperature.
As a result acupuncture increases the resistance to disease, reduces inflammation, promotes a feeling of well being, improves circulation, causes smooth muscle relaxation, stimulates tissue growth and repair.
